Criteria: Technical – Legal Professional Skills

Commercial Roles

Essential:

  • Significant and strong commercial and contract law experience.

  • Reliable legal judgement, analysis and appreciation of legal risk and the confidence to give persuasive, balanced and strong risk-based advice.

  • Skilled in presenting risk based legal advice to senior stakeholders.

  • An ability to think strategically and creatively, seeing legal issues in their wider context and advising accordingly.

Desirable:

  • Public sector commercial experience and complex commercial contract drafting experience in a public sector context.

  • An awareness of Public Law in a commercial setting including a knowledge of the procurement regulations and their application in practice.

  • Experience in managing/supervising lawyers and of legal project management.

Employment Roles

Essential:

  • Strong knowledge of employment law, gained through experience of advising clients across a broad range of employment law issues and managing conduct of Employment Tribunal claims

  • The ability to deliver analytical, accurate and risk-based advice together with strong drafting, negotiation and case management skills

  • The capacity to think strategically and creatively, seeing legal issues in their wider context

  • For the TUPE post, candidates would not be required to demonstrate Employment Tribunal experience or case management skills but rather a sound understanding of the law relating to transfers of undertakings in a public sector context.

Advisory Roles

Essential:

Experience of advising on one or more aspects of education or children’s social care law in the UK such as:

  • the legal powers and duties of education or children’s social care providers,

  • the powers and duties of government bodies in relation to education providers or children’s social care

  • Experience of advising education providers or children’s social care providers (including local authorities) in the UK on legal matters affecting their day-to-day operations.

Or

Experience of advising on one or more aspects of health and social care law in the UK such as:

  • the legal powers and duties of NHS bodies and NHS /adult social care providers, and the associated powers and duties of government bodies in relation to the NHS and adult social care)

  • healthcare regulatory matters in the UK including regulation of healthcare professions, healthcare standards / governance and medicines / medical devices.

Post holders will be expected to demonstrate:

  • reliable legal judgement and appreciation of legal risk

  • the ability to think strategically and creatively, see legal issues in their wider context and advise accordingly

  • The ability to conduct sound analysis and use secure legal research to produce timely and fit for purpose advice

  • the ability to communicate advice effectively both in writing and orally to senior clients and stakeholders

  • an understanding of the role of lawyers in government.

Qualifications – Minimum Eligibility Criteria

Academic

Applicants should have a minimum of a 2:1 honours degree in their first degree (in any subject). Where an applicant holds an overseas degree qualification this should be equivalent to a 2.1 degree. GLD will consider applicants who do not have a 2.1 degree but only where satisfactory evidence of equivalent high level academic and/or professional achievement can be provided (e.g. via relevant experience and results achieved for the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL)/CPE, Legal Practice Course (LPC), Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC).

Professional Qualifications

Professional entry criteria for Chartered Legal Executives (i.e. Fellows): Chartered Legal Executives are eligible to apply where (i) a Qualifying Law Degree (QLD) is held; or (ii) the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL)/CPE has been completed; or (iii) where exams have been passed (i.e. a score of 50% or above achieved), at CILEx Level 6*, in all of the following seven foundation subjects in law:

  • Contract Law

  • Criminal Law

  • Equity and Trusts Law

  • European Union Law

  • Land Law

  • Public Law

  • Law of Tort

Note: There are specific requirements relating to academic

  • achievement in the CILEx Level 6 exams where these are being used to demonstrate 2.1 degree equivalence as set out

Chartered Legal Executives should note that GLD will be willing to accept an, overall, average score of 65% or above across exams passed in the seven foundation subjects in law (where studied at CILEx Level 6) as demonstrating 2.1 degree equivalence (where a 2.1 degree is not held).
